This article explains how to determine whether your audio-visual content is eligible for YouTube CID (Content ID) and how to ensure it is enabled responsibly. CID is a tool used by rights holders to identify, manage, and monetize their intellectual property across YouTube.
Overview
YouTube CID allows rights holders to automatically detect uses of their content across the platform. FUGA’s Audio Visual Services support CID delivery for qualifying assets. However, not all content is eligible. To maintain the integrity of CID usage and avoid false claims or disputes, it’s essential to apply strict eligibility guidelines.
By enabling CID only for content with verified rights and clear ownership, you can:
- Maximize monetization opportunities
- Avoid negative claims against legitimate UGC
- Comply with YouTube policies and partner trust standards
Ineligible Content Types
The following types of content should not be enabled for YouTube CID:
1. Public Domain Content
- Works no longer under copyright, or released explicitly into the public domain, are not protected by CID.
- Examples include classical compositions with expired rights or uncopyrightable content.
2. Licensed (Non-Exclusive) Content
- Content you have not exclusively licensed cannot be claimed through CID.
- If rights are shared or retained by a third party, CID may result in conflicting claims unless all parties have granted explicit permissions.
3. User-Generated Content (UGC)
- If your content has been licensed for public use (e.g., under Creative Commons or similar terms), enabling CID can cause invalid claims.
- Avoid CID for content where UGC rights are already extended.
4. Royalty-Free Music
- CID should not be used on royalty-free tracks where end users have purchased or received licenses allowing unrestricted use.
- Enabling CID in these cases may violate user agreements and result in disputes.
5. Content with Unclear Ownership
- You should not enable CID for assets lacking full documentation of ownership or usage rights.
- This includes compilations, remixes, or collaborative works where all contributions are not properly cleared.
6. Indistinct or Static Reference Content
- CID relies on identifiable, dynamic audiovisual material.
- The following are generally ineligible:
- Lyric videos
- Slideshows or static images (e.g., album artwork only)
- Karaoke recordings
- Remasters or remixes with insufficient originality
- Sound-alike or imitation recordings
Responsible Enablement Practices
Before enabling YouTube CID:
- Confirm exclusive ownership or control of all rights.
- Avoid enabling on tracks previously distributed under royalty-free or open licenses.
- Ensure video content meets YouTube’s requirements for CID eligibility.
- Maintain internal documentation of rights to respond promptly to disputes.
