Introduction
This article explains how Digital Service Providers (DSP) payout rates are calculated and why the per-stream amount may vary across services, territories, and time periods.
How DSP Payout Rates Work
Many DSPs, such as Spotify and Apple Music, do not pay a fixed per-stream rate. Instead, they use a revenue-share model. Each DSP collects its total monthly revenue from subscriptions and advertising—after deducting fees—and divides that revenue by territory and listener plan type. The total pool for each group is then distributed across all streams that occurred during that period.
Your royalties represent your proportionate share of those total streams.
Why Rates Fluctuate
Because payouts are based on revenue and usage, the effective per-stream amount changes over time. Key factors include:
-
Listener plan: Paid subscriptions versus ad-supported plays generate different revenue.
-
Local pricing: Subscription costs differ by country or region.
-
Total listening volume: When overall streaming activity increases, the same revenue pool is divided among more streams.
These factors mean that no fixed or universal rate per-stream exists.
Alternative Royalty Models
Other DSPs may use different approaches to royalty calculation. For example:
-
SoundCloud: Fan-powered royalties, where revenue from each listener is paid directly to the artists they stream.
-
Deezer: Artist-centric model, which allocates revenue based on listener engagement with specific artists.
In all cases, royalties are still derived from total revenue and usage, not from a predetermined rate.
Excluded Streams
- Non royalty-bearing streams: Streams such as previews, some trial subscriptions, or user-generated samples may not generate royalties.
-
Despamming and fraud prevention: DSPs (Digital Service Providers) may adjust reports to exclude artificial or fraudulent streams.
Viewing Effective Rates
DSPs do not share a universal payout table with FUGA. The effective rates you see in your reports are calculated from your monthly royalty statements, which reflect the specific DSP, territory, and—when available—listener plan type.
For the most accurate overview, review your reported figures for each DSP within your accounting statements in the FUGA Platform.
