This article explains the expected behavior of content on Spotify after a takedown request has been successfully processed through the FUGA Platform. You will learn why certain tracks may still appear in a user's library or via direct links even after removal, how the Track Linking feature affects playback, and the standard timelines for these updates to reflect on the Digital Service Provider (DSP).
Spotify Takedown Behavior
When a product is taken down from Spotify, it is immediately removed from the platform’s internal search engine. This means users can no longer find the release by searching for the artist, album title, or UPC (Universal Product Code).
However, if a user has a direct URL to the product or has previously saved it to a playlist or their "Liked Songs," the product page will remain accessible. In these instances, the tracks will typically appear "greyed-out" and will be unplayable for the listener. This is standard behavior for the DSP (Digital Service Provider) to ensure that user playlists are not abruptly broken, while still honoring the removal of the content from public circulation.
Understanding Track Linking
If specific tracks from a taken-down product remain live on Spotify through a different release (such as a compilation, a "Best Of" album, or a single that was not included in the takedown), those tracks may remain playable even on the taken-down product page.
Spotify utilizes a feature called Track Linking to map identical recordings across different products. In this scenario:
The tracks on the removed product link will appear active rather than greyed-out.
When a user plays the track via the old link, Spotify automatically sources the audio from the active product.
All royalties and stream counts for these plays will flow through the active product that remains live on the platform.
Verifying Delivery Status
To confirm that a takedown has been successfully sent to Spotify, you should monitor the status within the FUGA Platform.
Navigate to Catalog.
Select the specific product from your list.
Scroll down to the Product Delivery Instructions section.
Locate the entry for Spotify.
Check the Status column on the right to confirm it is listed as TAKEN DOWN.
Service Level Agreements (SLA)
While FUGA delivers takedown instructions to Spotify near-instantly, the DSP requires time to update its global cache and search index.
The standard SLA (Service Level Agreement) for a takedown to be fully reflected on Spotify is approximately 5 business days. We recommend waiting for this period to elapse before confirming the removal with your Subaccounts or artists.
If the status is TAKEN DOWN but the content remains searchable after the standard processing window, further investigation may be required. Please contact your FUGA representative or reach out via our support channel.
